Pagan and Christian

In this battle ground of Christian and pagan ideology, it appeared that there was a need to demonstrate the power of the fledgling Christian church to the people of Britain. Many Wells record great battles between demons and Saints, a belief in the protectiveness of a Well against evil that still survives in Wells such as Our Lady's Well in North Yorkshire. Moreover, as the new religion took hold, association with a Saint, for example a water source for a monastic community as is the case with St Cedd's Well in North Yorkshire, became sacred. However, the larger group are Wells for which there is a miraculous, and often dubious, association between Saint and Well. Examples of this include springs that flowed from the ground where a Saint was buried, or, as in St Cuthberts Well in Cornwall, where relics were placed. Frequently such sanctity manifests itself in a belief that the Saint's powers are enacted through the waters of which St Keynes Well in Cornwall is typical.
